At Flickety Mac & Bauerhaus we apply sustainable principles to upholstery projects.
Our Principles
Waste Minimisation
The furniture industry has become like fast fashion. We believe that one way to reduce our footprint and to make best use of what exists is to maintain and rejuvenate what we already have.
Many older pieces of furniture are made from higher grade timbers that are currently used in manufacturing. Therefore we like to repair, clean and refinish wooden surfaces using natural oils and polishes.
We reuse whatever we can from original pieces. This may include springs and the restoration of coconut fibre and hessian traditional foundations used in antique furniture.
New materials are ordered on a project basis to avoid waste.
Our aim is to save quality furniture from landfill and give it a new life with enhanced comfort and style.
Use of eco-friendly materials
At Flickety Mac & Bauerhaus we like to use natural fibres where possible to cover furniture; wool, cotton, silk and rayon or combinations thereof. Foundations are made from jute webbing, hessian and coconut fibre and wadding can be wool or cotton where possible to ensure durability and biodegradability.
Most upholstery foams used for cushioning are made from polyurethane, a petrochemical by product. Polyurethane foam is flammable and is treated with flame retardants that often contain hazardous chemicals. It is not biodegradable.
An alternative is latex rubber foam used in combination with coconut fibre depending on the firmness required. Being a natural product, it is completely biodegradable. It is naturally resistant to dust mites, mould and mildew and contains no potentially toxic substances. No dyes, bleaches or chemical cleaning agents are used during the manufacturing process. This specialty foam comes in different thicknesses for use in upholstery.
